My handsome little brother - who since the age of puberty has been way older and more together than I have ever been even though he's three plus years younger - has been visiting with us the last few days with us as we wound down the year. It has been amazing.
My little brother has important grown-up conversations with important grown-up people and does important grown-up things. He vacations in magical places that you see in magazines and does glamorous things like work for the Olympics in Greece. He tells stories about the crazy people he encounters that are so funny you’re in tears and when you try to retell them, you can’t get the facts straight because the truth is so outlandish and bizarre, it can’t have happened that way - but it did. And he has adventures with his friends in that are like ones I have read about in books or seen people have movies. He is funny and charming and beautiful and silly and smooth and caring and this is the first time that I have been in awe of his magic and not torn up with jealousy at the same time, that he got it all. It only took twenty-five-some years and lots of bitchy comebacks and snarky grumbling to get here. Look, Ma, I’m finally growing up!
