It is Wednesday. I said I would post every Monday, Wednesday and Friday. But this is what my office/studio looks like right now... Which is EXACTLY what the inside of my brain looks like right now. And it's so freakin' messy, I don't have a clue where to start. Never, and I mean NEVER, take stuff out of a box you haven't opened in two years without having the time and the SPACE to deal with it. This is what the other side of the room looks like. I keep sitting down at the desk to sort things, looking at this pretty clean side, moaning and then leaving the room. Totally writing this in the kitchen where everything has a place - even if it isn't currently in that place.
Wednesday is starting out with a fail. Annnnd it is snowing. Odds are today is not going to end up a winner. Ugh.

For those of you who have been playing along with my over-sharing this past year, this is a follow-up to the Fish Plate Tag post. For those of you who haven’t been consistently playing, we have a set of plastic fishplates that have been floating about our family for years. The idea is to “tag” someone by secreting a plate in a gift or in his or her home or on his or her person and then wait to get it back in some equally secret way. I forgot I had gotten “tagged” last year by Brother who snuck the plate into a box with the jacket he surprise sent me. I forgot that I had the fishplate stashed somewhere in the house when I stupidly agreed that we were doing no gifts this year. I forgot until a friend of mine reminded me and then, even though Brother was coming to stay with us, I was stumped. How could I "tag" Brother when we were doing no gifts? Could I get the plate into Brother's luggage without him finding it amongst his undies? Should I pack it up and send it to him in SF while he’s flying here? We’ve already been gifted a chopped up fishplate and then gifted it back, glued together and in a frame. How to top that? And then Husband came through! Husband is AWESOME!!! Brother was having IPad issues and Husband was serving as his IT department. Lots of discussions about the possible names Brother might have registered his iPad under resulted in Brother giving Husband his password. Which meant that Husband and I could take the iPad when Brother was showering and snap a picture of the fish and make it Brother’s iPad screensaver!!! Brother’s response to the screensaver? “Well, played. Well, played.”
My response to his, "I AM THE WINNER!!!" ... followed by a thoroughly crazy movie villain laugh and silly dancing. And, because Brother could care less about changing it, it is likely to stay as his screensaver for a long, long while. Of course, we still have the dang fishplate but that can’t last for long. Brother has a birthday coming up. And if that doesn't work, there is Arbor Day... My handsome little brother - who since the age of puberty has been way older and more together than I have ever been even though he's three plus years younger - has been visiting with us the last few days with us as we wound down the year. It has been amazing.
My little brother has important grown-up conversations with important grown-up people and does important grown-up things. He vacations in magical places that you see in magazines and does glamorous things like work for the Olympics in Greece. He tells stories about the crazy people he encounters that are so funny you’re in tears and when you try to retell them, you can’t get the facts straight because the truth is so outlandish and bizarre, it can’t have happened that way - but it did. And he has adventures with his friends in that are like ones I have read about in books or seen people have movies. He is funny and charming and beautiful and silly and smooth and caring and this is the first time that I have been in awe of his magic and not torn up with jealousy at the same time, that he got it all. It only took twenty-five-some years and lots of bitchy comebacks and snarky grumbling to get here. Look, Ma, I’m finally growing up! |
